Show-Me Smoke-Free Programs
Building on last school year's success with 600 youth and advisers attending the first ever Show-Me Smoke Free Summit, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services Youth Tobacco Use Prevention Initiative continues to gain steam. Under this initiative and in collaboration with its partners and contractors, the tobacco and healthy communities programs will provide technical assistance and funding to schools and communities to organize and train Smokebusters and YEA! TEAM youth groups (high school and/or middle school based). Each group along with its adult mentor(s) will learn to: 1) be tobacco-free role models; 2) effectively educate the public, their parents/guardians, their peers, and younger children about the negative consequences of tobacco use and the influences of tobacco in the community; 3) counter tobacco influences with pro-health messages; and 4) effectively advocate for tobacco-free school and community environments.
Through the end of the 2009-2010 school year, contracts have been implemented with the following six organizations (five universities and one metropolitan health department) to provide the programming to more than 120 schools throughout the state of Missouri.

Missouri Southern State University
As funding allows, these programs will be continued in the existing schools and expanded to additional schools in the 2010-2011 school year. Information on the activities of each group will be available on this website so stay tuned!
